    Werkstattgalerie   presents   works   by   Ingeborg   zu   Schleswig-Holstein:   a   new abstractness that, in reality, is a different kind of concretion.

    The first phases of “abstract art” outgrew the traditional figurativeness, breaking out from  the   anecdotal   quality   of   narrative   painting   with   its   orientation   toward recognizability.  Now a new abstraction with its very own direction has arrived on the scene.  Traditionally a virtual world has dominatingly confronted conventional reality. The “New Abstraction” no longer abstracts from existing reality, but emancipates itself from conventional definitions and views of what is permitted to count as real: possible, imagined, explorable realities open up.

    After her work with Andy Warhol, Ingeborg zu Schleswig-Holstein took up and radicalized the intentions of early pioneers like Nay and DeKooning. The result is her own worlds of colour, which are now developing in a new rigour. Their inner dynamism radiates an intense calm that draws the visitor into their discoveries. Accordingly, the viewer needs time to penetrate into the suggested constellations that emerge between the layers of painting, colors, or gestures.

    Her paintings develop not in abrupt leaps, but instead evolve gradually one from the other, similar in this sense, to  organic growth. In recent years, her colours have become more transparent and lucid. Colours superimpose themselves in soft layers that permeate each other with ambiguous possibilities of depth, thus creating dynamic spatial possibilities.

    Motifs appear as if through a zoom lens in greater detail, without changes in the size of the image. Parallel with the oil paintings, the artist also makes watercolours, mostly in a small, intimate format. These genres both support each other and assert
    their own individual characters.

    She  has painted several projects in an dialogue with composers, writers and poets like Augustyn Bloch  (A Prayer for Gdansk),  Robert Wilson,  Liao Yiwu  (For a Song  and   100   Songs)  and  Tanikawa Shuntarō (Talking   Water). The later has been realized at Werkstattgalerie in May 2012 when Ingeborg zu Schleswig-Holstein met the Japanese poet together with the Swiss rapper Jürg Halter who read their newly published Renshi-poem (jap.: Chain-poem)  Talking   Water.  Paintings from this meeting will be presented at Murray Edwards College along with most recent paintings and drawings.
