  • About Jacqueline Morreau

    Self-Portrait, Hand to Mouth [1989]
Charcoal and pastel on washed paper, 76 x 56 cms
    Donated by the artist 1998.

Self-Portrait, Hand to Mouth is one of a series of works in which Jacqueline Morreau tries to capture subjective notions of herself (rather than aiming for an objective likeness). Here she shows herself as being slightly off-balance, her life lived rather precariously - 'hand to mouth' in more than one sense.

Psyche Awake, Eros Asleep I [1991]
Etching with chine colle, artist's proof, 25 x 30 cms
    Donated by the artist 1998.

This etching is from the portfolio of prints Disclosing Eros. Eros is the Greek god of love and Psyche was a beautiful maiden with whom he fell in love; their story was told by Lucius Apuleius (2nd century A.D.). Psyche was forbidden to look at Eros (Cupid), but she could not resist taking a look while he slept.
