Ann Kasteel has stated: “I was on holiday. The weather had been continuously bad, and I had had a pretty awful night. I woke very early in the morning, looked out of the window and saw this young woman sculler on the river alone. She came past very quickly in the dark. Up until that moment, there hadn’t been anything really inspiring that I felt I might want to take home and paint. But I knew that picture had to be painted; it was a compulsion.”
